Revalidation

Revalidation
With the great responsibility that doctors hold in the UK, caring for the health of our country, it is recognised as being of the utmost importance that patients are able to have full faith and confidence in those treating them. With the process of revalidation, the General Medical Council, Royal Colleges, NHS and various health departments are looking to instill greater public confidence than ever before in doctors practicing in the UK.

In one sense, what is being proposed with the introduction of revalidation is no different from what should be happening in every doctor’s practice already. Revalidation will not involve any single one off assessment of a doctor’s skills and experience but will be based on a continuing evaluation of their practice in the context of their typical working environment. The process will be based on local systems of annual appraisal over a five-year period and will simply affirm periodically what has already been demonstrated through the appraisal process.

Revalidation will cover both relicensing (applicable to all doctors) and recertification (applicable to all doctors on the GP and Specialist Register) in one single process. The revalidation consultation ended on 4th June 2010, involving doctors, employers and patients, and will be used to help better develop the implementation of the process. A report on the results of the consultation is expected to be released by the GMC in autumn 2010.

The GMC will decide and announce when and where the first doctors will be revalidated once the components of revalidation have been tested and piloted, are embedded in local organisations, and are ready to support revalidation. It is expected that this will take place at some point in 2011, and thereafter rolled out over the following five years.

With revalidation being applicable to all doctors practicing in the UK, we here at Radcliffe Learning will ensure that we remain up-to-date with the changing career requirements of all those affected.
