The Doctor as Medical Manager
If you’re a doctor who has been practising for more than a few years,
you will already appreciate the importance of good leadership to clinical excellence.
The NHS is built around multidisciplinary teamwork, and though the Clinical Leadership
Competency Framework (CLCF) states that all doctors should share leadership
responsibilities, a good manager can make or break the success of any team. If
you’re a skilled manager who wants to learn more sophisticated management
techniques, or how to get more out of your team, this course is for you.
This small group programme describes leadership and management skills
necessary to work within the NHS framework and explores various views and
techniques concerning leadership in large organisations. It will focus on
increasing your personal effectiveness and will allow you to consider and
appraise your own style currently and into the future. We will
demonstrate that leading at a senior level is essential requires the
development of the right kind of leadership skills, some of which may be a
departure from traditional methods. Furthermore, in order to employ these
skills, it is essential that the political and funding framework (NHS) is
understood.
