Advanced Medical Teaching Skills for Doctors

While the GMC states that every doctor has a professional responsibility to be a teacher, it’s just as important that doctors are good  teachers. This  will provide you with the tools and practical techniques to deliver a higher standard of medical education. This course is aimed at who are passionate about education, and who want to build on their existing medical teaching skills to work towards becoming a first class teacher.

Features of the course:

·         Draw the skill development model and explain the eight core parts

·         Successfully coach any type of individual, recognising how to bring out the best in each person

·         Describe the 13 characteristics which help the medical teacher communicate

·         Write a standard, behaviour & condition for a learning objective, identifying clearly each part

·         Describe the KIM model and state its’ two advantages to training

·         Use the eight teaching behaviours for interactivity

·         Name the five responsibilities that the teacher holds

·         Illustrate the four types of questioning techniques

·         Name four of the five reasons why a student may be having problems

·         Describe lighthousing and how it improves communication

·         Explain the effective feedback model; describe each of the five parts

At the end of the course each delegate will also be able to:

·         Keep a record of their learning experiences so that learning points can be reflected upon and referred to after the course

·      Have the opportunity to prepare a detailed Action Plan which sets SMART objectives, activities with timescales, together with the Record of Learning and Action Plan, a method of incorporating what you have learnt into your everyday practice

Be advised that you will be asked to deliver a 10-minute teaching session on Day 1, followed by a 15-minute teaching session on Day 2. Please make preparations for your first teaching session to the point where it can be delivered to the audience, and either research your second session or bring materials so you can prepare it on the first evening.

When you book onto the course you will receive a pre-course module worth one CPD point to complete prior to attendance. Upon finishing the course you will be able to complete a  post-course module also worth one CPD point reflecting on what you have learned and integrated into your practice.
