There is a huge
expectation that the modern clinician must possess an array of organisation
skills and competencies beyond those of their regular day-to-day duties. The
act of job planning should be a systematic activity designed to produce clarity
of expectation for the employer and doctor about the use of time and resources
to meet individual and service objective. For SAS doctors especially, there is
a fundamental requirement to take part in relevant management activities,
especially in job planning.
Following the
introduction of the SAS grade contract in 2008, it was agreed that all SAS
doctors must undertake job planning
and appraisal training, as well as developing a portfolio of their progress, in
order to progress through the SAS pay thresholds. The emphasis falls not only
on attending the relevant training, but on effectively recording the progress
made in order to demonstrate your competencies and level of training.
